The river
The High Rhine has been calmed by many barrages to become a peaceful river. You can paddle upstream from Basel to Lake Constance and, apart from at the power stations, only have to transfer at the Rhine Falls in Schaffhausen and usually at Koblenzer Laufen. The Rhine at Laufenburg is very suitable for a paddling course. Here you will find calm spots for your first attempts, but also some eddies where you can practise basic whitewater techniques. Depending on the water level, the conditions in Laufenburg vary - from boring to life-threatening.
Crossing the river at a wide point makes it clear why you should plan your tour carefully on tidal waters. With a bit of luck, steep, short waves can form here in strong westerly winds (wind against the current), which are definitely suitable for open water training.
Requirements
- You are healthy and can swim safely
- You have your own accident and health insurance cover.
- Your participation is at your own risk.
Kayak season
You can paddle as long as the water is liquid. As the Rhine at Laufenburg does not form an ice cover even in winter, there is no season. Only the clothing is adapted. Paddling a kayak in winter is not particularly cold and is much more comfortable than cycling, for example. Nature comes closer in winter because wild animals then save energy with a shorter flight distance.
Water temperatures above 15° C can be expected from mid-May to mid-October. The bathing season is a good time for roll training, rescue training or safety training.

Not all kayaks are equal.
Different boats are suitable for respective conditions. You will find out the clear differences yourself. For this purpose, very different kayaks are ready here - from moderate whitewater boats to racing sea kayaks and a Canadian canoe. You start with the boat you know how to handle and build up your skills. This way you can gradually try more challenging kayaks and get to know the different types.
From a certain height, however, some boats (especially the Greenlander) no longer fit and at about 195 cm or 100 kg it becomes tight. Depending on your physique, training is then only possible in your own boat or in the Canadian.
Greenland style
The kayaking culture of the Inuit does not know anything about a life jacket. Accidental swimming was almost always fatal either way. However, in order to avoid swimming after a capsize, the Inuit have developed the Greenland roll into a high culture and a sporting discipline of its own.
The Greenland standard roll is very different from the one taught in most kayak courses here. It is easier to learn and can become a reliable self-rescue technique more quickly. Of course, not every paddler needs to master a kayak roll. However, Greenland-style rolling can be really fun and is a pleasant way to cool down in summer. It is highly recommended for those paddlers who already know how to roll a kayak but really want to rely on it in challenging conditions.
Health
Paddling makes you happy, strong and beautiful. It is highly recommended by doctors and physiotherapists. Paddling strengthens the muscles of the entire torso, shoulders and neck and is not only therefore the perfect balance for desk-bound people. - Water brings us to peace and balance. On the water, everyday life disappears completely.
